AT THE CENTRE OF HER IRONIC FAITH, HER BLASPHEMY, IS THE IMAGE OF THE CYBORG

Student Gallery VCA, Melbourne, 2018

Materials: 3D rendered graphic videos, archival print, acrylic, fluorescent lights, performance

At the centre of her ironic faith, her blasphemy, is the image of the cyborg uses durational performance, digitally rendered images, videos and inorganic matter to establish a portal to the following revolution: a non-binary realm founded by queer theory and technology. The performing qualities of the installations embody femininity and a queer identity in virtual form to present an ideal escapism from the conventions of the current, problematic, patriarchy. This escapism to a post-gender world expresses the notion of queer survival in the present patriarchal condition. The sculptural form in my work upholds notions of the masculine aesthetic; in using these tropes however, I rely on machinery to remove human touch and debunk pre-set masculine ascriptions. This questioning hopefully opens us to the potential attributes of the cyborg as a queer embodiment, rather than a binary-based being, and thereby responds to, and channels Donna Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto.
